How to determine the load center of a forklift?

How to determine the load center of a forklift?

  • 2024-04-16
The process of finding the load center of a forklift is simple. Please check the information on the forklift nameplate. It will tell you: 1. Distance from load center 2. Vertical mast 3. Tilt to the right 4. Height

When you stack loads evenly, such as pallets, the center of the load will be in the middle of the load. So for a load of 1000mm, the load center will be 500mm. You should also keep in mind the maximum height and length of the load, based on the information on the nameplate. Additionally, loads that exceed the specified load center distance may only be lifted if the load is well below the limit weight.

In addition, when operating a forklift, we also need to pay attention to the following four points to better ensure the stability of the body and avoid accidents:
1. Stable triangle
Keeping the forklift's center of gravity inside the stability triangle is one of the hardest things for an operator to learn during training.
The forklift uses a three-point suspension system. These three points are located halfway between the two loaded wheels and the rear wheel. When these points are connected by imaginary lines, a stable triangle is generated. Therefore, to avoid tipping over, the operator must ensure that the combined center of gravity of the forklift and load is always within the stability triangle.

According to current data, rollovers are a common form of forklift accidents, accounting for 24% of total accidents. The center of gravity may move outside the triangle due to factors such as imbalance or heavy loading. Additionally, carrying large loads and driving on uneven or sloping terrain are other possible causes of accidents.

2. Center of gravity of loading
It is crucial to pay attention to the center of gravity of the load you are trying to lift. At the same time, it is also important to consider their overall focus.
When the load is not centered, such as an engine or other asymmetrical item, you must carefully estimate the center of gravity. On the other hand, the load center of a large load may be much further than that of a regular 24-in.

Therefore, the nameplate on your forklift will tell you what the lifting capacity is, given a specific load height and load center. If your load center exceeds the load center of your forklift's ultimate lifting capacity, your lifting capacity will be significantly reduced.

3. Forklift center of gravity

Forklifts also have a center of gravity that moves when cargo is lifted. When a load is lifted, the center of gravity moves forward. In order to ensure that the center of gravity of the forklift is always within the stability triangle, care must be taken that the lifted load center does not exceed the permissible limits.

4. Operate in a safe environment
Keeping weights low is a good habit to keep your load safe and stable. In addition, driving carefully when stopping, turning and starting is an effective way to maintain stability. Also, don’t forget to buckle up!
Always use extreme caution on slopes, ramps, or other uneven terrain. Never lift or turn heavy objects on uneven surfaces. In this case, your center of gravity will quickly shift outside of the stable triangle.
As a rule, when traveling on a slope without a load, your forks should always be pointed downhill. When carrying cargo, the forks should always point toward the top of the ramp to avoid the cargo falling.

While operating a forklift, if it begins to tip over, do not attempt to jump out of the vehicle. According to research, it is better to stay inside the vehicle and in the direction of the fall.
